OC-1 Solo Safety

While out on an oc-1 solo run, what item(s) would you recommend to have in case of trouble, i.e. paddle, iako, ama cracks or breaks? What has been your experience?

275lbs New Paddler

Aloha, my name is Tony, and I've recently moved to Oahu to chase my dreams of paddling. I don't really know if I should invest in a 2man canoe, or try to get on a 6man team to build some open water time till my weight drops enuff to fit on an V-1/OC-1, and I was hoping that a few of you gentlemen might have some ideas on which way I should focus. I'm a pretty big guy, that can barely get down to 210-220 @ 6'0'' when I'm in excellent shape.

Mahalo for your thoughts,

-Tony

OC-1 for flatwater

I understand the reluctance to compare canoes on this forum. It's highly subjective and can also vary from paddler to paddler. But perhaps a more focused question could survive discussion. Which canoe might offer more efficient flatter water performance, Huki V1-X or Kamanu Pueo? I won't have an opportunity to paddle either but I trust both manufacturers enough to buy without trying. Sometimes that's just the way it is. My only observation is that the Huki seems to have a flatter waterline length with little or no rocker. I'm making no inferences though.

Outrigger Connection's East Coast Rep?

Anyone have contact information for Outrigger Connection's East Coast rep? I believe it is Chris O'Kieffe but the OC website is down.

Steering an OC-6 for Newbies

Howdy everyone -

I've browsed for OC-6 steering topics and can't find much on here --

We are a small dragon boating and outrigger community in Charleston, SC that has recently gotten a hold of an OC-6.
We are taking her down to Treasure Island in a few weeks and I need some steering advice. There is no one around who can give me better pointers than what I have researched online, so if anyone has advice for me, I would really appreciate it.

I can steer her just fine and straight WITHOUT paddling, but I'm sure anyone with a sense of water can do that...
So here are my questions:

Life Jacket to Paddle In??

Hey Everyone,

I'm looking for some life jackets to paddle in. I've recently started paddling concrete canoes at school and the competition rules dictate that you're team must wear life jackets during the races. I'm open to any style, whether it be the ones that inflate automatically or not, the main issue is that it isn't motion restrictive. We've done fine in our races wearing out old crappy ones but now we're looking to upgrade them a bit. We've saved up a bit of money for these but we are definitely not looking for the most expensive, top of the line pfd's out there.
